Our Mission

Christ the King Preparatory School in Newark, NJ seeks to provide quality, Catholic, college preparatory education to economically disadvantaged urban young people with limited educational options.

Christ the King Preparatory School utilizes a longer school day and year, academic assistance, and counseling to prepare students with a broad range of academic abilities for college. All students at Christ the King participate in a work-study program through which they finance the majority of the cost of their education, gain real world job experience, grow in self-confidence, and realize the relevance of their education.

Christ the King Preparatory School is sponsored by the Archdiocese of Newark and endorsed by The Sisters of Charity of St. Elizabeth and The Marist Brothers of the Schools. Click brochure image to download the CTK Prep 2007-2008 Brochure.

Message from the President

The promise of Christ the King Preparatory School is the promise of opportunity.  The opportunity offered students to work for their own private education.  The opportunity offered young people to be the first in their family to attend college.  The opportunity offered students to build a future that might otherwise be impossible.

Christ the King Prep will provide these opportunities to its students on a daily basis.  This opportunity will set us apart.

As part of the successful Cristo Rey Network, our unique Corporate Work Study Program will allow our students to pursue their educational dreams while learning about the corporate community where they will one day work.  Work and study will make Christ the King students successful.  This unique approach to schooling will set our students apart.

Each week the newspapers feature new reports chronicling the challenges faced by schools serving urban communities.  At Christ the King Prep we have designed a program that meets these challenges by combining excellent classroom instruction with meaningful community partnerships.

At a time when more than half of students in urban areas do not attend college, the dropout rate at Cristo Rey schools in 2006 was 2.6% — and 96% of last year’s Cristo Rey graduates enrolled in college.

This is the promise we are bringing to the greater Newark community. This is the promise being delivered by our Corporate Sponsors. We are so grateful to them for their leadership.

Every young person deserves an opportunity. This is our mission. This is our hope.

Thank you for all that you have made possible.

Opening Day Remarks-
Rev. Edward Glynn, S.J.

B.O.O.T. Camp – August, 2007

This is a great and historic day: a great and historic day for each of you students, a great and historic day for Christ the King Prep, and a great and historic day for the Archdiocese of Newark and the City of Newark.

For each of you students this is a great and historic day because you have applied to, have been admitted into, and are now enrolled in Christ the King Preparatory School. You are the very first students enrolled in Newark’s Cristo Rey High School. As President I not only welcome you this morning but I congratulate and encourage you. I congratulate you because you now belong to a distinguished group of students in the United States. As a student at Christ the King Prep you belong to the Cristo Rey National Network of students. Ninety-five percent of the students who graduate from this Network’s schools go on to College. That means that four years from now the opportunity of college is there for each one of you, the opportunity and promise are there for you to begin four years from now your collegiate studies in preparation for becoming a doctor, a lawyer, an accountant, a religious leader, a community leader, a business leader. Your education here at Christ the King Prep promises to prepare you for that opportunity,

This is also a great and historic day for Christ the King Prep. This is the first morning in the educational life of this school that together we are creating. What we are creating is not just a school, but a Cristo Rey School. What we are creating is a Catholic school that will provide students whose families cannot financially afford a quality college preparatory education the opportunity for such an education. Each one of you is a partner in this creation. We count on you and depend on you as partners.

You are our partners as together we create this school. You are our partners as together we successfully create the corporate internship program that makes Christ the King Prep and your education financially possible. You are our partners as together we create the culture of this school. You are our partners as together we create the community that constitutes this school. Both the culture and the community that together we are creating will shape the quality of the education that will be available at Christ the King. You are our partners in creating an environment most conducive to teaching and learning. I commend and congratulate you for being a partner. We are counting on each of you as we create Newark’s Cristo Rey High School, Christ the King Prep.

This morning is not only a great and historic day for each of you and for Christ the King Prep, this morning is also a great and historic day for the Archdiocese of Newark and the City of Newark. Christ the King Prep is the first new Catholic High School to open in Newark in 50 years. Our successful creation of this school will be the creation of a rich educational and cultural asset for the City of Newark and for future generations after generations of students,

Thus, on this great and historic morning, I welcome you and congratulate you as partners in the creation of Christ the King Prep.
